  • Ingram Planetarium

    Just down the road in Sunset Beach is one of the finest planetariums in the region.  Explore the stars with Ingram Planetarium's wide variety of programs.  Join their staff during astronomical events and learn more about the universe.

  • NC Aquarium

    Fort Fisher is home to the North Carolina Aquarium and you can get there by driving southwest from Carolina Beach or simply catching the ferry from Southport.  Daily programs ranging from feedings, animal interactions and video presentations ensure each trip to the aquarium is memorable. 

  • Oak Island Lighthouse

    Located on the U.S. Coast Guard Station Oak Island in Caswell Beach. Completed in 1958, it stands 169 ft. The main light is a four light rotating fixture, reaching 24 nautical miles offshore and flashing every 10 seconds.

  • Old Baldy

    For nearly 200 years, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse, Old Baldy, has marked the mouth of the historic Cape Fear River.  Today, thousands of visitors make the exciting journey each year to beautiful Bald Head Island to learn about the island’s rich maritime past at the Smith Island Museum of History and experience Old Baldy up close – including the climb to the top for a breathtaking view of the surrounding area’s outstanding natural beauty.

    The North Carolina Maritime Museum's Southport branch houses a collection of memorabilia pertaining to the vast nautical history of the "Lower Cape Fear" area of southeastern North Carolina.

Events

  • Christmas By The Sea Festival

    Christmas is perhaps the best time of year to visit the North Carolina coast. The average air temperature is 59.4 degrees. In a celebration of this wonderful weather, the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors a festival - Christmas By The Sea. We invite you to consider decking the halls with local mistletoe and seashell ornaments while eating oyster stuffing and listening to the laughing gulls outside your beach cottage. The festival is a collection of events sponsored by many community organizations stretching three weekends. The first weekend is a hometown parade and a tour of homes on Oak Island. The second weekend is the Southport historic home tour, lighted boat parade (flotilla), choral concert and the downtown merchants extend their hours. The third weekend usually includes a band concert and children's activities.

  • NC Fourth of July Festival

    For over 35 years Southport has been home to the North Carolina Fourth of July Festival and the event continues to be a highlight of the summer.  From the parade, qult show, decorating contest to the concert series, the Fourth of July is always at its most colorful in Southport.

  • NC Oyster Festival

    Each fall, oyster lovers from across the region descend on Brunswick county for the annual North Carolina Oyster Festival held in Ocean Isle Beach.  From live music to the surfing contest, this event draws thousands including competitors for the NC Oyster Shucking Championship and Oyster Stew Cook-Off.  Good times don't stop when summer ends, be sure to attend this great event in October. 

  • U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament

    Thirty years ago a small group of community leaders met and decided that they needed an event to showcase the great fall fishing Southport-Oak Island area has to offer. The prize money for the first tournament was guaranteed by those community leaders signing a promissory note at a local financial institution - thus the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament was born. The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament now attracts almost 500 boats annually and is held in high esteem by the community and anglers.

  • Dosher Memorial Hospital

    Dosher Memorial Hospital, a 100-bed community hospital with 36 licensed acute (inpatient) beds and 64 licensed skilled nursing center beds. Named after its chief surgeon Dr. Julius Arthur Dosher, the people of Smithville Township voted to pay a minimal hospital tax to ensure access to quality health care locally.

    Approximately one mile from the Cape Fear, the hospital is located in the coastal historic town of Southport, N.C. in Brunswick County.  The hospital is overseen by a publicly-elected Board of Trustees and generously supported by a volunteer force of nearly 200, making Dosher Hospital unique in the state of North Carolina.
